What are IMG Friendly Emergency Medicine Residency Programs?

What is Emergency Medicine residency?

It is a training program where physicians are trained by certified physicians to take care of acutely ill patients including resuscitation, evaluation, diagnosing, treating and proper consultation and disposition.


What procedures am expected to learn as an emergency medicine resident?



Procedures might vary from program to another but in general you will master the following: adult medical resuscitation, adult trauma resuscitation, ED bedside ultrasound, cardiac pacing, central venous access, chest tubes, procedural sedation, cricothyrotomy, dislocation reduction, intubations, lumbar puncture, pediatric medical resuscitation, pediatric trauma resuscitation, pericardiocentesis, and vaginal delivery.

 

How many years are the Emergency medicine residency?


Most EM residency are 3 years however 4 years residencies do exist.


What are the average score for AMGs and IMGs who match in Emergency Medicine?


The average scores for AMGs who matched in Emergency Medicine in USMLE step 1 and 2 CK are 223 and 234 repectively.
For IMGs who matched in Emergency Medicine the average scores in USMLE step 1 and 2 CK are 218 and 223 respectively.

 

What are the match statistics for Emergency Medicine?


About 75% of EM residency positions offered in the match go to AMGs and about 25% of positions go to IMGs. About 90% of AMGs who apply do match and about 55% of IMGs who apply do successfully match , which is considered a very good percentage in this competitive specialty

What should IMGs do to increase their chances in matching in emergency medicine?

1- Answering the questions during the interviews appropriately and showing interest. Read this book at least twice before any interview: EM Q&As

2- You should apply to the same programs where IMGs matched in the previous years, these programs are found in many states as described in the below mentioned list.
